Why won’t my Google ad run because of sexual content?

Updated September 26, 2026 · 8 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle restricts sexual content. It does not treat it as an ordinary product ad. Nudity, including blurred or censored intimate body parts, is strongly restricted and can serve only for users who meet age, local-law, SafeSearch, and sexual-content search conditions. Sex toys, strip clubs, and suggestive poses are moderately restricted. These ads cannot run on YouTube or the Display Network, and they must not target minors.

What Google puts in each bucket

Google’s Sexual content policy, reviewed on September 26, 2026, says these ads show only in limited cases based on the user’s search, age, and local law. Ads must not target minors. Violations get a warning at least 7 days before suspension.

BucketWhat the page namesServing conditions on the page
Strongly restricted: nudityVisible genitalia, female breasts, or buttocks, including blurred or censored representationsUser age, local law, SafeSearch, and a sexual-content search
Partial nudityLower or outer curve of the female breast, or a majority of the buttocksAge, local law, SafeSearch
Sexual merchandiseSex toys, sexual enhancers, sexual fetish lingerieAge, local law, SafeSearch
Sexual entertainmentStrip clubs, adult film festivals, sexually suggestive live streaming, suggestive role-playing gamesAge, local law, SafeSearch
Suggestive elementsLewd language; legs spread; touching covered intimate parts; mimicking sexual positionsAge, local law, SafeSearch

Moderate restriction is not an approval. A sex-toy ad is still limited by age, law, and SafeSearch, and it still cannot use the formats below. Condoms and fertility offers are birth-control and fertility ads, which this merchandise list does not name.

Where the ad can actually serve

Google says sexual content ads can run on Google Ads and on the Google Search Network. They cannot run on YouTube, AdMob, Google Ad Manager, the Display Network, or the Google Ad Manager Network. Formats the page lists as not allowing this content include app ads, dynamic display ads, Gmail ads, image ads, reservation display ads, and TrueView.

Interpretation: a Search text asset that is eligible under the restrictions can still sit next to a disapproved image asset in the same campaign. Do not read a Search status as permission for the video.

The same page has two location headings: places where all sexual content will not serve, and places where strongly restricted content will not serve. The help-center text does not label those country lists clearly enough to reprint here. Use the live article before you add a country. Campaigns must also follow local law. Ads must not target minors. That limit sits next to ads aimed at children and teens.

A dating app is a different gate

Certifying a dating product is dating ads. Hook-up positioning, paid sexual acts, and undisclosed chatbots are decided there. If the creative itself is nude or suggestive, this sexual-content policy still applies. Remarketing limits for sexual content are personalized advertising, not a second copy of this table.

Frequently asked questions

Does blurring the image make nudity allowed?

No. Google’s nudity category includes representations that are blurred or censored. Visible genitalia, female breasts, and buttocks stay strongly restricted.

Can the same ad run on YouTube if Search approved it?

No. Google says sexual content ads cannot run on YouTube or the Display Network, and image ads and TrueView are among the formats that do not allow this content. A Search status does not cover those placements.

Setup workflow

  1. Decide whether the asset is nudity, partial nudity, sexual merchandise, sexual entertainment, or a suggestive pose.
  2. A dating app still needs the dating certification. Nudity on that creative is still this policy.
  3. Do not put the asset in an image ad, a TrueView ad, Gmail, or a Display campaign. Google says those formats and networks do not run sexual content.
  4. Do not target minors. Serving also depends on the user’s age, local law, and SafeSearch. Strongly restricted ads also depend on a sexual-content search.
  5. Open the live policy for the two country lists before you add a location. A warning comes at least 7 days before suspension.
