Why was my Google location asset disapproved?

Updated October 19, 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle disapproves a location asset when the owner has not approved that place, when Google does not recognize the address, when the location is permanently closed, or when the advertised product is not sold there. The location asset requirements, reviewed October 19, 2026, also say the address, hours, and photos live in Google Business Profile. Google Ads reads that profile. It does not replace it.

Four ways the pin fails

RuleWhat Google names
Owner approvalAdvertising a location without the explicit approval of the business owner at that location.
Unrecognized placeThe address is not recognized. The example is 555 Martian Road, Massachusetts, Maldives.
ClosedThe location is permanently closed. If it reopens, update the status. Google points that update to a separate help page.
Wrong business or productThe location does not match the business in the ad, the advertiser sells nothing there, or the product is not sold or found at that place.

Google’s product examples are specific:

  • A bank in Florida using a bank in California.
  • A landing page about refrigerators attached to a supermarket chain that does not sell refrigerators.
  • A landing page about refrigerators attached to a massage parlor.

Interpretation: the pin has to be a place this advertiser can actually hand the customer the thing in the ad. A nearby branch of a different company, or a store that happens to be open, does not satisfy the examples.

Local Services Ads have their own requirements page. A location asset on a Search ad is this rule. A business name typed into the ad is the business-name field.

Fix it in the Business Profile

Google says the business information and the images of the location are managed in Google Business Profile, not in Google Ads. The profile is available only in certain supported countries and regions. This policy page does not print that country list.

If the disapproval is capitalization or punctuation, edit the business name in the profile to standard title case and remove unnecessary symbols. Then unlink and relink the profile in Google Ads so the change syncs. Spelling and symbols in general are the editorial requirements.

If the online location cannot be edited to meet the rule, Google says to upload a different location that does. If you disagree, or you have fixed the asset, appeal from the Google Ads account when that option is there. The other path Google names is the Disapproved ads and policy questions form.

This requirements page does not print a review-time or a 7-day suspension warning. Google does list tobacco and recreational drugs as related policies for this format, because a location that promotes those products still has to follow tobacco and recreational drugs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pin a location the business does not own?

No. Google does not allow advertising a business location without the explicit approval of the business owner at that location.

The store closed and then reopened. Where do I change that?

A permanently closed location is not allowed. Google says to update the status if the location reopens. The address, hours, and photos are managed in Google Business Profile, not inside the ad.

Why did capitalization fail on an address I cannot edit in Google Ads?

If the location asset is disapproved for capitalization or punctuation, Google says to fix the business name in Google Business Profile, using standard title case and dropping unnecessary symbols, then unlink and relink the profile so Google Ads picks up the change.
