What Google allows in the business name field

Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerOn ad formats that have a business-name field, Google allows the domain, the recognized name of the advertiser, or the promoted app. The business name requirements page disallows a generic or location-based substitute, and it disallows promotional language such as “Buy” or “Sale” in that field. A warning is issued at least 7 days before suspension.

What the field is for

This rule applies only to formats that ask for a business name. Policy: the field cannot be anything other than the domain, the recognized advertiser name, or the downloadable app being promoted.

Capitalization, punctuation, and spacing inside headlines are a different checklist, on the editorial requirements page. A name that implies a license or an endorsement you do not have is misleading representation.

Domain, dealer, and verification

You can use the domain as the business name, with normal spacing between words, if it fits the 25-character limit. Google’s example is www.acmesolutions.com identified as “Acme Solutions.”

An authorized reseller or dealer adds qualifying language. The page’s example is a car dealer of Acme vehicles in San Antonio using “Acme of San Antonio.” Interpretation: the city is allowed there because it qualifies a real brand relationship. It is not permission to invent “San Antonio Plumber” with no brand behind it.

If advertiser verification is complete, the business name must strictly match the domain or the name submitted during verification. When the legal name does not match, or it exceeds 25 characters, Google says you can pursue Brand Verification if you own an active trademark registration for the name you want to show. The policy text reviewed here does not publish the form address. Use the link on the live business-name page.

Fix

  1. Replace a city-plus-trade name or a “Sale” line with the domain, the recognized business name, or the app name.
  2. If the account is verified, match the verified name. Do not shorten it into a different brand.
  3. Edit and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use “Chicago Plumber” as the business name?

Not if it is only a place and a trade. Google’s examples of disallowed generic or location-based names are “Mountain View Plumber” and “New York Taxi.” A domain or a recognized business name can still include a city when you are an authorized dealer, and Google’s example is “Acme of San Antonio.”

What if advertiser verification used a different legal name?

Once verification is complete, Google says the business name must strictly match the domain or the name submitted during verification. If the legal name does not match, or it is longer than 25 characters, the page says you can pursue Brand Verification when you own an active trademark registration for the name you want to use.

Is this the same as misleading representation?

No. Misleading representation is a false affiliation, a hidden qualification, or a name that does not identify the business in the ad or on a call. This page is the character and content rules for the business-name field on formats that have one.
