What is Google Ads advertiser verification? Deadline, pause, and documents

Updated September 20, 2026 · 11 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle Ads advertiser verification is how Google confirms who is paying for ads and publishes that name in Ads Transparency Center. It is not a disapproval of one RSA and not automatically a policy suspension. If Google gave you a deadline, missing it pauses the account. Only an admin can complete the tasks. False information is a circumventing systems issue.

Three Google problems people mix up

LabelWhat it isWhere to go
Advertiser verificationIdentity, billing, and business-operations tasks; ads may be restricted until doneThis page
Limited ad servingEligible ads, capped impressions for unqualified advertisersWhy is my Google ad limited, not disapproved?
Account suspendedNothing from that account until reinstatedWhy is my Google Ads account suspended?

Verification status is one input Google lists for limited-ad-serving qualification. Finishing it does not, by itself, lift a cloaking suspension.

Why Google selected the account

Google’s Advertiser verification page lists reasons you may be selected: the gradual rollout (all advertisers will eventually complete it); advertising behavior or content labeled potentially suspicious; certain industries such as financial services; brand-related queries; features that are often misused; or a suspension that requires verification before you can appeal (the account stays suspended until the appeal is granted).

Google may pause the account during verification if it suspects policy violations (misleading representation, unreliable claims, unidentified business, business-name requirements, solicitation of funds, sensitive events, coordinated deceptive practices), physical or monetary harm (including impersonation and unauthorized customer-support ads), attempts to circumvent verification, or if it could not verify your information. Sources it may review include regulatory warnings, rulings, and impersonation/scam complaints.

Deadline vs optional

From Tasks required for Advertiser verification:

  • Deadline: the account is paused if you do not finish in time. The date is on the account page. Start early — review can take 5 business days.
  • No deadline: you may still verify to unlock formats (business name and logo in Search ads) or remove limits. Google says you can still run ads if you skip it.
  • Already paused: you can run ads again only if you complete verification.
  • Suspended and appealing: you get access to the appeal form only after verification.

Google’s account pausing help is the companion article for the paused state. It is not the same as the suspensions overview.

What you will actually be asked

Tasks vary by account type (individual vs organization vs agency), billing setup, and industry. Published examples:

  • Questions about the organization and who pays for the ads.
  • Business-operations questions (most advertisers will not see this). Inaccurate answers fail the task.
  • EU political-ads declaration. If you select Yes, Google says the campaign cannot run in the EU (Google does not allow EU political ads in the EU). You can still run elsewhere.
  • Billing: payment-history questions; a temporary charge up to $1.95 USD whose last six digits are the code; paying an outstanding balance.
  • Individuals: government photo ID, phone code (area code must match payments-profile country), US SSN (deleted after the task; 3 failed attempts → ID; if you are verifying to appeal a suspension, failing ID after that can close the appeal), video selfie matching the ID (5 attempts).
  • Organizations: optional D-U-N-S; organization documents whose legal/DBA names match the payments profile; affiliation code to org phone or email (required if you have a deadline).
  • Agencies / Grants: agency info plus client info. You can send a link to the client or complete it if you admin their payments profile. A separate verification may run on the client’s profile.

Industry extras (certifications, not the identity program) still apply for gambling, healthcare, financial products, cryptocurrencies, elections, dating in Japan, and others Google lists. Verification does not replace those applications.

What goes public

After verification, advertiser name and location appear in ad disclosures, My Ad Center, and Ads Transparency Center. Google also says some account information is publicly available, including name-change history, ad creatives, dates and locations ads served, ads removed or accounts suspended for legal or policy reasons, and organization contact information. If the verified name differs from the payment-profile name, disclosures can show “Ads funded by (payment profile name).”

Common document fails

MistakeWhat Google’s tasks page says to do
Legal name on the ID ≠ payments profileEdit the profile name (pencil) before you upload. If you lack edit access, contact Google.
DBA / trade name not on the registration documentBoth trade/DBA and legal name must match the document you submit.
Emojis, “Official,” or a domain in the document name fieldGoogle lists inaccurate names, promotional language, domains (unless part of the valid legal/trade name), emojis, and phone numbers as document problems.
Agency marked as not an agencySelect Yes for “Is your organization an agency?” or the account may be paused or suspended.

Submitting false info violates the Circumventing systems policy and can suspend the account — see circumventing systems. Google Ads users must be 18 or older; failing that check can suspend the account.

Setup workflow

  1. Open Admin → Policy → Account. Read whether you have a deadline. Only an admin should proceed.
  2. Answer organization questions accurately — including whether you are an agency. Google says selecting No when you manage ads for a client can pause or suspend the account.
  3. Match names: payments-profile legal name must exactly match the government ID or organization documents. Edit the profile before you upload.
  4. Finish billing tasks (micro-charge code, outstanding balance) if they appear. Bank transfers can leave the account paused until funds settle.
  5. If Google asked for verification in order to appeal a suspension, complete it first. Three failed US SSN attempts, then a failed ID path, can close the appeal.

If an RSA is Disapproved for unreliable claims, verification will not rewrite it — use why Google ads get disapproved.

Frequently asked questions

Is advertiser verification the same as a suspended Google Ads account?

No. Verification is a set of identity, billing, and business-operations tasks. A suspension is a policy, billing, or access lock on the whole account. Google may pause an account until you finish verification, and it may require verification before you can open a suspension-appeal form. Complete the tasks — do not treat the pause as a cloaking ban.

Who can complete verification?

Google’s tasks article says only a Google Ads account admin can complete the tasks. The verification UI now lives under Admin → Policy → Account (the page was previously labeled Advertiser verification). If you are a standard user, you cannot finish it for the account.

How long does Google take to review?

Google says it can take up to 5 business days to review submitted info, and in rare cases up to 30 days. Start before the deadline. The deadline is on the account page. Missing it pauses the account.

Do I have to verify if Google has not emailed me?

Google is rolling verification out so that all advertisers will eventually complete it. You may verify proactively to unlock features (for example business name and logo in Search ads) or to remove limits. Without a deadline, Google says you can still run ads if you skip it. With a deadline, you cannot.
