Why did Google disapprove my ad for an unacceptable URL?
Direct answerGoogle disapproves display URLs that break standard syntax, use an IP address, or include characters it treats as unacceptable. The unacceptable URL examples are an IP address such as 123.45.678.90, and characters such as !, *, #, _, and @. A warning is issued at least 7 days before suspension. After you edit and save, re-review typically takes 24–48 hours.
The three examples
- URLs that do not follow standard syntax.
- Ads that use an IP address as the display URL. Google’s example is 123.45.678.90.
- Display URLs that use unacceptable characters. Google’s examples are !, *, #, _, and @.
Safer display URL: example.com/running-shoes. Risky display URL: 123.45.678.90, or example.com/sale_#1. The page does not define “standard syntax” beyond those examples. If the string is not a normal host and path, replace it with the domain people should see, then save.
Labels that look like a URL problem
A page that returns an error, a login wall, or a redirect loop is destination not working. Two display-URL domains in one ad group, including on paused ads, is one website per ad group. Fix the label in the disapproval. Cleaning the characters will not repair a 404, and a single clean domain will not repair an IP address sitting in the display URL.
After the string is a normal URL
- Replace an IP display URL with the domain.
- Remove the characters Google named, and any other character that is not ordinary URL syntax.
- Edit the ad or asset and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours. Check Status on Ads & assets.
- Appeal from the account if the URL already follows the page and you believe the label is wrong.

Frequently asked questions
Is a broken landing page this label?
No. HTTP 404 and 403, when AdsBot requests the page, are destination labels. Unacceptable URL is about the URL string: standard syntax, no IP address as the display URL, and no unacceptable characters in the display URL.
Which characters does Google name?
The examples are !, *, #, _, and @ in the display URL. The list is marked non-exhaustive, so a different odd character can still fail. The page does not publish an allow-list of symbols.
Google’s IP example looks invalid. Does that matter?
The published example is 123.45.678.90. Quote it as Google’s example of an IP address used as a display URL. Do not treat the example as a lesson in which numeric addresses are valid.
Check the display URL before the ad is saved
LaunchGuarding can scan the ad text around the URL so a tracking character is not left in the line people see.
