Why an ad group can use only one website

Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle does not allow more than one display-URL domain in a single ad group. The one website per ad group page includes keyword URLs, and it includes paused ads. The fix is to leave one domain in the ad group and move the other site to its own ad group. A warning is issued at least 7 days before suspension.

What to look at in the ad group

Google says the disapproval can mean the ad group contained more than one top-level domain in display URLs or keyword URLs. Interpretation: “top-level domain” on this page is Google’s wording for the site, and the example is two display URLs on different sites. Do not treat that sentence as a lesson in DNS. Compare the domains actually saved on the ads and keywords.

An ad that points at a page about a different product on the same site can still fail unclear relevance. Two ads for the same business in one auction slot are unfair advantage. Neither of those is fixed by splitting domains, and splitting domains does not fix them.

The cleanup

  1. Edit display URLs and keyword URLs so the active and paused items in the ad group use one domain.
  2. Move ads and keywords to another ad group or campaign if you still want to advertise the second site.
  3. Remove anything you do not want to keep.
  4. When the ad group contains only that domain, request a review. Saving an edited ad also sends it back to review, which typically takes 24–48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do paused ads count?

Yes. Google says paused ads also have to use the same domain as the other ads and keywords in the ad group. Pausing the second site does not clear the disapproval.

Is a subdomain a second website?

The page’s example is two display URLs hosted on different sites. It does not define whether a subdomain of the same registrable domain is a second site. If the disapproval names two domains, compare the display URLs and keyword URLs in that ad group rather than guessing from the subdomain.

Is this double-serving?

No. Unfair advantage is about more than one ad for the same business in a single ad location, or an affiliate placement the program forbids. This label is two domains inside one ad group.
