Why did Google put my Shopping product in the wrong category?

Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle assigns the category. Override it only when that assignment is wrong in a way this page names. The Google product category attribute, reviewed October 28, 2026, accepts a predefined ID or the full path, not both. A bad override can add required fields the product does not need, or remove fields it does.

When an override is accepted

  • Some categories add required fields. Apparel, mobile phones, and software are the examples. If Google assigned one of those and the product is not in that category, override it so those fields are not required.
  • If a Shopping campaign is built on Google product categories, you can reassign the product so it sits in the right campaign group.
  • Alcohol has to be categorized correctly. If the assignment is wrong, override it. The allowed branches are Food, Beverages & Tobacco > Beverages > Alcoholic Beverages (499676) and its subcategories, and Arts & Entertainment > Hobbies & Creative Arts > Homebrewing & Winemaking Supplies (3577) and its subcategories. What the ad can say is the alcohol policy.

Use a predefined category. If none matches, or you want your own label, use the product type attribute. If the taxonomy is not available in your language, use the English value or the numeric ID. A description that pastes a category path is a description problem. Apparel fields that appear because of category 166 are the apparel attributes.

Categories Google names for a specific offer

  • A bundle uses the category of the main product. Google’s example is a camera sold with a bag: Cameras & Optics > Cameras > Digital Cameras (152).
  • A mobile phone or tablet with a contract or installment plan uses Mobile Phones (267) or Tablet Computers (4745). If the phone’s price is 0, the category has to be 267. The price itself is the price attribute.
  • A gift card uses Gift Cards & Certificates (53).
  • A software subscription uses Computer Software (313) or a subcategory, such as Antivirus & Security Software (5299).

In Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the Google product category can organize product groups for bidding. In other countries, Google says to use the product type attribute for that. Pick the most specific category that matches the product’s main function. An MP3 player that also shows the time is still an MP3 player (233), not Electronics (222). Categories published after August 2011 are translated to the current list, so an old path may not match what you see in Google Ads.

This attribute page does not print a 7-day suspension warning.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to fill in a Google product category?

No. The attribute is optional. Google assigns a category from the product data. Submit one only to override that assignment in the cases this page names: a wrong category that adds required fields, a Shopping campaign built on categories, or alcohol that was categorized incorrectly.

Can I submit both the category ID and the full path?

No. Google says to submit either the numeric ID or the full path, not both. The value has to be a predefined Google category. If nothing fits, use the product type attribute for your own label instead.

A phone with a contract has a price of 0. Which category does it need?

The category page says that if you submit a price of 0 for a mobile phone sold with a contract, the category has to be Electronics > Communications > Telephony > Mobile Phones, ID 267. A tablet with a contract or installment plan uses Tablet Computers, ID 4745.
