Why won’t my Shopping ad show to children or teens?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 7 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle holds back Shopping categories from children and from teens even when those products can be advertised to adults. The Shopping ads protections for children and teens, reviewed October 20, 2026, turn off ad personalization on YouTube, Google Display, and Display & Video 360 for people under 18, and they restrict product categories globally. Google says more products may be added later.

Children

For users under the digital age of consent, Google disables ad personalization and restricts sensitive categories. The examples it gives for that layer are teen and adult media, beauty and cosmetics, sensitive and controversial topics, romantic content, and violent, scary, or crude content. The product categories below are restricted globally for children, even if they are allowed on other Google products.

CategoryWhat Google names
Alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugsThe products, plus anything strongly related. Examples: vineyard tours, e-cigarettes, drug paraphernalia.
Age-sensitive mediaMovies, TV shows, and console games that are sensitive to show to children.
Dangerous productsProducts that need adult supervision. Examples: paintball, airsoft, ax-throwing, spray paint, glass-etching or graffiti products, fireworks, weapons or accessories, hunting.
Beauty and body imageCosmetics and external personal care focused on body image. Body modification includes cosmetic procedures, weight loss, and piercings.
Food and drinkConsumable food and drinks, regardless of nutritional content.
HealthHealth care and medical issues, including reproductive health, substance abuse or recovery, eating disorders, and “miracle cures.” Also pharmaceuticals, medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements.
Social and gamesSocial networks. Video-game skins and loot boxes. Virtual worlds and chat rooms meant for adults.
Sensitive topicsAstrology, the occult, the paranormal. Politics, religion, and other sensitive social issues.
Sexual and romanticAdult content. Romance in games, books, or comics, including kissing. Significant bare skin near the breasts, buttocks, or groin, such as swimwear or underwear modeling.
Violence and shockBoxing, wrestling, martial arts, self-defense training. First-person shooters and battle games. Graphic or scary imagery, including the examples zombies, skeletons, masks, scary clowns, and blood.

Made for Kids and the family-content rule are child-directed ads. Less-healthy food scoring is HFSS. A cosmetics brand that can advertise to adults is beauty ads. This table is who cannot be shown the Shopping ad.

Teens

For people above the digital age of consent and under 18, Google also disables personalization on those same surfaces. The examples it gives for that layer are adult media, body modification and weight loss, shocking content, and virtual worlds or chat rooms meant for adults. The restricted Shopping categories are shorter than the child list.

Restricted for teensWhat Google names
Adult content and adult mediaSexual and mature content for adult audiences. Movies, TV, and console games that are sensitive to show to people under 18.
Alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugsThe products and anything strongly related. The same examples: vineyard tours, e-cigarettes, drug paraphernalia.
Body modification and weight lossWeight loss, tanning, and piercings.
Dangerous productsSpray paint, glass-etching or graffiti products, fireworks, weapons or accessories, hunting.
Pharmaceuticals and supplementsPharmaceuticals, medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements.
Shocking contentViolent, gruesome, graphic, obscene, profane, and other content that could shock or scare.
Adult chatPlatforms meant for adults whose main purpose is letting people connect and talk with strangers.

Weight-loss copy that fails for adults is fitness ads. Alcohol that is legal for adults is alcohol ads. Google says it may update these Shopping categories. This page does not print a 7-day suspension warning.

If the product itself cannot be in the feed, age is the wrong diagnosis. That list is unsupported Shopping content.

Frequently asked questions

Does this block a vitamin even if adults can buy it?

Yes. Pharmaceuticals, medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements are on both the child list and the teen list. Google says these Shopping categories are restricted even when the products are allowed on other Google products.

Is ordinary food included, or only less-healthy food?

For children, Google says products related to consumable food and drinks, regardless of nutritional content. That is broader than the high fat, sugar, and salt policy. The teen list reviewed here does not repeat the all-food row.

What age is the digital age of consent?

The policy uses that phrase and does not print a country-by-country age table. Children are under that age. Teens are above it and under 18. Use the live page if you need the age Google is applying in a country.
