Why Google disapproves an ad for unfair advantage

Updated September 30, 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle does not allow the Google Network to be used for an unfair traffic advantage over other auction participants. The unfair advantage examples are affiliates who advertise against the applicable affiliate-program rules, and trying to show more than one ad for your business, app, or site in a single ad location. The policy warns at least 7 days before suspension. It is not an immediate ban.

What is actually not allowed

The page sits under abusing the ad network. Google says advertisers may not trick or circumvent ad review with ads, content, or destinations. The specific ban is using the Google Network to gain an unfair traffic advantage over other participants in the auction.

Policy: the non-exhaustive examples are affiliates that advertise on Google Ads against the applicable affiliate program rules, and trying to show more than one ad for your business, app, or site in a single ad location. Google does not, on this page, publish a list of which programs forbid paid search. If the program’s own rules forbid the ad, this policy is the Google label. The affiliate workflow is in the dropshipping and affiliate guide.

The same page also says keywords should fit the audience’s likely intent, and each website or app should offer distinct value. The example is avoiding similar products and prices across related destinations. That sentence is not inside the “examples” list. Do not invent a percentage of overlapping products. If two domains sell the same catalog at the same prices, this is the instruction Google published for that situation.

Do not “fix” it by opening another account

Circumventing systems is the egregious policy for new accounts, cloaking, and resubmitting disapproved content to get around review. Unfair advantage is the 7-day label for the auction examples above. Creating a second account so both ads can show is the circumventing example, not a remedy.

A destination that only forwards the click, or that copies another site, is insufficient original content. Distinct value on the unfair-advantage page does not replace that destination rule.

How to fix the disapproval

  1. Check whether two ads for the same business, app, or site can appear in one ad location. Google’s ad-location article is the definition of that slot.
  2. If you are an affiliate, confirm the program allows this paid placement. A forbidden placement is a named example.
  3. Give each destination its own offer. Google says not to promote similar products and prices across related sites. Then edit and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours.

Google says the saved ad is re-reviewed, typically within 24–48 hours. Appeal from the account if you believe only one ad can serve in that location and the affiliate placement is allowed. Remove the ad if you cannot fix it. Repeated violations after the warning are how the account moves toward suspension.

Frequently asked questions

Is unfair advantage the same as circumventing systems?

No. Circumventing systems is an egregious suspension for hiding from review or opening a new account after a ban. Unfair advantage warns at least 7 days before suspension. Its examples are advertising against an affiliate program’s rules, and trying to show more than one ad for your business, app, or site in a single ad location.

Does Google define how similar two websites can be?

The not-allowed examples do not include a similarity score. On the same page, Google says each website or app should offer distinct value, and gives the example of avoiding similar products and prices across related destinations. Treat that as the page’s instruction, not as a second prohibited-example list.

Where are the affiliate-program details?

The policy names affiliates who advertise against the applicable program rules. How that shows up in dropshipping and affiliate offers is covered in the dropshipping guide. This page is the disapproval label, including the double-serving example those offers do not always have.
