Why did Google disapprove my YouTube video ad?
Direct answerMatch the disapproval label to the YouTube setting that caused it. Unavailable video covers private, deleted, live-premiere, and members-only videos. Restricted access covers age gates, IP claims, and YouTube content restrictions. Geo restricted means the video is blocked in a country the ad targets. Video content changed means the file was edited after the ad was created. Unacceptable video format means Google Ads or YouTube does not accept that file type. Each of these pages warns at least 7 days before an account suspension.
Which label you are looking at
| Label | What Google does not allow | Fix published on that page |
|---|---|---|
| Unavailable video | Deleted, private, live premiere, or sponsors / members only | Set the video to Public or Unlisted. The label is removed automatically. |
| Restricted access video | Age-gated by YouTube, an IP claim by YouTube or the content owner, or another YouTube content restriction | Edit and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours. Age appeals are described on the unavailable-video troubleshooter. |
| Geo restricted video | The video is not available in a country the ad targets. Example: blocking territories after upload. | Edit and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours. |
| Video content changed | The video changed after the ad unit was created | Create a new ad creative after the change. The troubleshooter says delete the disapproved ad and rebuild it with the updated link. |
| Unacceptable video format | A format Google Ads or YouTube does not support. The example is a dvdproj iDVD project file. | Convert it, or upload a different video. Google points to supported YouTube file formats and does not list them on this policy page. |
Unavailable video
Google’s check is the YouTube status after you submit the ad. A video set to private, deleted, marked as a live premiere, or limited to sponsors or members is not allowed. The published path in YouTube Studio is: Content in the left menu, point at the video (Live tab for live uploads), open the arrow under Visibility, choose Public or Unlisted, then Save.
Two further sentences sit on the same troubleshooter. If the video is already showing the unavailable-video error, delete the video ad and re-upload the video. If the video is age-restricted, it cannot be used for ads; appeal the restriction in YouTube Studio, and use a different all-ages video if the appeal is denied.
Restricted access, geography, and later edits
Restricted access video names three causes: YouTube age-gating, an IP claim started by YouTube or the content owner, and other YouTube content restrictions. The page’s own fix steps are edit and save, with re-review typically in 24–48 hours. Interpretation: those causes live on the YouTube video, so saving the same restricted video again does not change the fact the page lists. Resolve the YouTube restriction or choose another video, then save.
An IP claim on the YouTube asset is this technical label. Selling or streaming someone else’s work without a license is Google’s separate copyrights policy, which uses a certification tied to the domain or channel.
Geo restricted video disapproves a video that is not available in a country the ad targets. The example is blocking the video in specific territories after upload. The page does not say whether to unblock the territory or to stop targeting that country. Either change can make the video available where the ad runs. That pairing is an interpretation of the example, not a second rule.
Video content changed is one sentence: videos that changed after the ad unit was created. The fix on that page is to recreate the ad creative after the change. The unavailable-video troubleshooter is more specific: delete the disapproved ad and create a new one with the updated video link.
File format, and what this is not
Unacceptable video format disapproves uploads Google Ads or YouTube does not support. The only example on the page is a dvdproj iDVD project file. If you cannot convert the file, upload a different video. This page does not reprint YouTube’s format list. Use the supported-formats link on Google’s policy page, because that list can change.
Blurry visuals, illegible text, and poor sound are image and video quality. A public video that looks sharp can still be disapproved for members-only access, and a clear video in a dvdproj file can still fail the format label.

Frequently asked questions
Does Unlisted clear an Unavailable video disapproval?
Google’s troubleshooter says the label is removed automatically once a private, deleted, live-premiere, or members-only video is set to Public or Unlisted. The same page also says that if the video is showing the unavailable-video error, delete the video ad and re-upload the video. Use the sentence that matches the error you see.
Can an age-restricted YouTube video run as an ad?
The unavailable-video troubleshooter says an age-restricted video cannot be used for ads. You can appeal the age restriction in YouTube Studio. If the appeal is denied, use a different video that is accessible to all ages. Age-gated videos are also named on the restricted-access page.
I trimmed the YouTube video after the ad was approved. What now?
Both the unavailable-video troubleshooter and the video-content-changed page say the ad is disapproved when the video changes after the ad is created. Delete the disapproved ad and create a new one with the updated video link.
Check the video status before the ad is built
LaunchGuarding can scan the ad and the landing page for policy risks before a YouTube status problem and a copy problem get mixed into one disapproval.
