Why did Google change my Shopping product title?

Updated October 22, 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle can rewrite a Shopping ad title from your landing page, images, and other signals, and you can opt out. The title attribute, reviewed October 22, 2026, is still required, limited to 150 characters, and has extra words for contracts, installment plans, and products that can be customized.

When Google rewrites the title

Google says it may promote attributes from the landing page, the images, and other signals so the ad matches the search. Its mattress examples:

  • Search “King size mattress.” Merchant title: “Memory foam medium firm mattress king...” Shown title: “King - Memory foam medium firm...”
  • Search “XYZ King Memory foam mattress.” The same merchant title can become “XYZ - King - memory foam king size...”

If the submitted title is already the best fit, Google says it will not change it. To opt out of Product Data Customization for Shopping ad titles, contact the account manager or support. Google says those requests are typically processed in 3 to 5 business days.

Capitalization and spelling in a Search ad are editorial requirements. This page is the product title in the feed.

What you have to write yourself

  • Every product needs a title. A title that was not made with generative AI can use either the title attribute or the structured title attribute.
  • A generative-AI title uses structured title. Put the words in content, and set digital source type to trained_algorithmic_media. Blank source type means default, which means the title was not made with generative AI.
  • Both the plain title and the structured content stop at 150 characters. Google recommends ASCII characters.
  • Russia only: information products such as books, printed media, digital media, and products that include age-restricted information start with an age rating. The ratings are 0+, 6+, 12+, 16+, and 18+. The format is the rating in parentheses, then the title. Google’s shape is “(18+)” plus the product title.
  • A mobile phone or tablet that needs a contract has to say so. Google’s phrases include “with contract,” “12 monthly payments with plan,” “24 monthly payments with subscription,” and “18 monthly payments.”
  • US only: a phone or tablet on an installment plan uses phrases such as “with 12 monthly payments” or “with 10 monthly installments.”
  • A customized product includes the customization. Google’s example is engraving: say that the product can be engraved.

Printer cartridges and compatible or refurbished third-party products have their own title pages. A product the feed is not allowed to contain, such as a future concert ticket, is unsupported Shopping content.

This attribute page does not print a 7-day suspension warning.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop Google from rewriting the title?

Yes. Google says you may opt out of Product Data Customization for Shopping ad titles by contacting your account manager or support. Requests are typically processed in 3 to 5 business days. If the title you submitted is already the best match for the search, Google says it will not change it.

How do I submit a title that was written by generative AI?

Use the structured title attribute, not the plain title attribute. Put the text in the content sub-attribute and set digital source type to trained_algorithmic_media. If you leave the source type blank, Google uses default, which means the title was not created with generative AI.

Does a phone on a payment plan need special words?

Google says to state the contract length. Its examples are “with contract,” “12 monthly payments with plan,” “24 monthly payments with subscription,” and “18 monthly payments.” For US installment plans, the examples are “with 12 monthly payments” and “with 10 monthly installments.”
