What material do I submit for a Google Shopping product?

Updated October 30, 2026 · 5 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerSubmit the main fabric or material, in one field of up to 200 characters. Google’s material attribute, reviewed October 30, 2026, is required when the products vary by material. It is optional when material is simply a reason someone might buy.

What belongs in the field

Google disapproves the product when the minimum requirements are missed. Submit the main material. If you want more than one, use a single value such as cotton/polyester/elastane or walnut/70% polyester/30% acrylic. The value is not case sensitive. Use words a shopper would recognize: leather, not lthr, and calfskin, not calf. Google’s apparel examples include suede, patent leather, and 100% rayon.

Color, size, and pattern have their own fields. Apparel color and size rules are on the apparel page. A precious metal needs both attributes. Google’s white-gold band uses material white gold. The platinum-plated ring uses material platinum and color silver.

Submit material for every variant that is distinguished by it, and give those variants the same item group ID. Google also recommends repeating that fact in the variant option attribute. That recommendation is a best practice, added with the variant option attribute in May 2026. Material is not only for clothing. Google names furniture, curtains, and hardware as products where shoppers may filter by it.

This attribute page does not print a 7-day suspension warning.

Frequently asked questions

The dress is cotton, polyester, and elastane. Do I submit three material attributes?

No. Google accepts one material value. Put the main material first and up to two more, separated by slashes, such as cotton/polyester/elastane. A second material attribute is not how you add the rest.

Can I submit “n/a” when the material does not matter?

No. The attribute is optional when material is not a reason to buy. Google says not to submit n/a, none, multi, or other. Leave it off instead.

The ring is white gold. Is the material “white”?

No. Google’s wedding-band example uses white gold as the material. A precious metal also needs a color. The platinum-plated ring example uses material platinum and color silver. Color stays in the color attribute.
