Do I have to add a GTIN to Google Shopping?

Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerSubmit a GTIN when the manufacturer assigned one and you know the digits are right. Do not invent a number to fill the field. Google’s GTIN attribute, reviewed October 22, 2026, says a missing or incorrect value may limit visibility, and that a product with no assigned GTIN does not need one.

Which number counts

  • UPC in North America, GTIN-12: 12 digits. Convert an 8-digit UPC-E to 12 digits first.
  • EAN in Europe, GTIN-13: 13 digits.
  • JAN in Japan, GTIN-13: 8 or 13 digits.
  • ISBN for books: 13 digits. Convert an ISBN-10. If you have both, submit only the 13-digit number.
  • ITF-14 for multipacks, GTIN-14: 14 digits.

The field accepts 0, 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits. Spaces and dashes are allowed and ignored. Up to 10 values can be repeated. Google says a GTIN is ideally paired with the manufacturer part number. The MPN attribute is a different field. It is required when the product has no manufacturer-assigned GTIN, and optional for a custom-made product that has no clear MPN, such as art or a handmade shirt. Submit one only when you are sure. Unless you are the manufacturer, do not invent one. Variants usually have their own MPN. Apparel sizes are the exception Google names: sizes of the same product often share one.

A missing GTIN means Google cannot assure an accurate match. A missing or incorrect GTIN may limit visibility. That is a visibility limit on this page, not a statement that every blank GTIN is a disapproval.

A product the feed is not allowed to contain at all, such as a future concert ticket, is unsupported Shopping content. The photo of the barcode is a different failure: a UPC printed on top of the product image is covered on Shopping product images.

This attribute page does not print a 7-day suspension warning.

Frequently asked questions

The product has no barcode. Should I type zeros?

No. Google says some products have no assigned GTIN and you do not need to submit one. If you are not sure the number is correct, do not submit it. Do not guess and do not make one up.

I have both an ISBN-10 and an ISBN-13. Which one goes in the feed?

Submit only the 13-digit ISBN. Convert an ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 first. An 8-digit UPC-E is converted to a 12-digit UPC before you submit it.

Will a wrong GTIN disapprove the whole account?

This attribute page says products with a missing or incorrect GTIN may have limited visibility, and that Google cannot assure a match when the GTIN is missing. It does not print an account-suspension warning.
