Why Google disapproves ads for search spam

Updated October 7, 2026 · 6 min read · Reviewed against public platform policy pages

Direct answerGoogle disapproves ads that point to a destination removed from Google Search by a manual action. The spam policies for Google Web Search page, under abusing the ad network, says site owners are notified in Google Search Console. Practices that violate those Search spam policies are not allowed. The examples are keyword stuffing, cloaking, sneaky redirects, doorway pages, and spamming social network sites. A warning is issued at least 7 days before suspension.

What to open first

The ads policy does not ask you to rewrite a headline as the first step. It says the destination was removed from Google Search through a manual action, and that Search Console is how site owners are told. Best practice: start with that message, because an ad edit cannot put a removed site back into the ads auction by itself.

The non-exhaustive examples of practices that violate the Search spam policies are keyword stuffing, cloaking, sneaky redirects, doorway pages, and spamming social network sites. This ads page does not define each tactic. Do not treat a missing definition here as permission.

Three labels advertisers mix up

  • A page that exists to show ads, to copy another site, or only to send people elsewhere is insufficient original content. Doorways are named there too. That policy does not require a Search manual action.
  • Showing Google a different page than users see, or opening a new account after a suspension, is circumventing systems. That one is egregious. A cloaking example on this spam page does not downgrade a circumventing-systems suspension to a 7-day warning.
  • Keywords that do not match the destination, including keyword spam in the ad, can be unclear relevance. That is an ad-to-page mismatch. It is not a Search Console manual action.

After the site is eligible again

  1. Resolve the manual action Search Console reported. The ads article does not publish a separate Search Console checklist.
  2. In Google Ads, edit the ad and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours.
  3. Appeal from the account if the destination was not removed from Search and you believe the disapproval is an error.

Frequently asked questions

Will editing the headline clear this?

The policy is about the destination, not a single line of ad text. Ads are disapproved when the destination was removed from Google Search through a manual action. Fix the site problem Search Console reported, then edit and save so the ad is reviewed again. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours.

Is cloaking always this 7-day label?

Cloaking is one example on this page, and this page warns at least 7 days before suspension. Circumventing systems is a different, egregious suspension for hiding from review, including showing Google different content. Use the label in the account. Do not assume a cloaking finding is the milder one.

Are doorway pages the same as insufficient original content?

Doorway pages are an example here and also a named pattern on the insufficient-original-content policy. Insufficient original content is the destination that exists mainly to show ads, copy other sites, or send people onward. This label adds a specific trigger: a Google Search manual action.

Check the landing page before the next submission

LaunchGuarding can scan a destination for thin or mismatched content before an ad is submitted. It does not clear a Google Search manual action.
