Why was my HTML5 ad disapproved?
Direct answerGoogle disapproves HTML5 ads that do not function properly or that appear blank. The unacceptable HTML5 ad examples are assets in child frames, resources from unapproved third-party sources, non-Google fonts, and audio or video tags. Google names 404s and robots.txt blocks as common reasons the ad looks broken, and it links an HTML5 Validator. A warning is issued at least 7 days before suspension. After you edit and save, re-review typically takes 24–48 hours.
What the page treats as broken
The ban is functional: the HTML5 ad does not work, or it renders as a blank unit. Google marks the examples as non-exhaustive:
- Embedding assets in child frames.
- Loading resources from unapproved third-party sources.
- Using non-Google fonts.
- Adding audio or video tags.
The page does not publish a font allow-list or a host allow-list. Do not treat a forum list as that policy. The validator is the tool Google names for finding why the unit is broken or blank.
Interpretation: an audio tag inside an HTML5 file is listed with the blank-ad examples. That is not a ban on every video campaign. A video asset that starts off or paused is handled under misuse of ad features. A prize game inside the HTML5 unit, or Javascript that changes what is clickable, is that same misuse page, not this blank-file rule.
404s and robots.txt inside the creative
Google’s troubleshooter says common errors include “Error 404 (Not found)” and robots.txt errors that might be blocking Google AdsBot. Review the ad and its contents, run the HTML5 Validator, fix the cause, and upload the ad again. A robots.txt rule that blocks the landing page, rather than a file the HTML5 unit needs, is destination not crawlable. A blurry or flashing image is image quality.
After the file renders
- Open the disapproval and fix every issue it lists. Google says a later notification may add detail.
- Run the HTML5 Validator linked from the policy page.
- Upload the corrected file again.
- You can also edit the ad or asset and save. Re-review typically takes 24–48 hours. Check Ads & assets.

Catch a blank unit before upload
LaunchGuarding can scan the ad copy and the landing page that the HTML5 file points to, so a working file is not paired with a claim the destination cannot support.
